1️⃣MDR countdown: the 0.4% fee on merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000 (capped at ₹300) will come into effect on October 15 — 16 days away. FM Nirmala Sitharaman said, “it’s not a tax”; customers will pay ₹0, while P2P transfers remain free.
2️⃣RBI’s proposed 60-day debit hold: banks may block debits for up to 60 days on accounts suspected of being linked to fraud or used as mule accounts. The deadline for comments is October 2.
3️⃣At GFF 2026, RBI launched “UPI Tap & Pay” — simply tap your NFC-enabled smartphone on a POS terminal without scanning a QR code. NPCI also introduced “MyUPI”, an AI-powered support assistant for UPI users.
4️⃣UPI privacy protections are now live: only the payer’s last 4 digits are displayed, while account numbers and UPI IDs are also masked.
