P2PIndia’s Competition Commission (CCI) has closed its antitrust case against Google over its treatment of real-money gaming apps.
The case, filed by WinZO in 2022, challenged Google’s decision to allow only selected real-money games, such as fantasy sports and rummy, on the Play Store.
But India’s new Online Gaming Act, effective from May 1, 2026, changed the market completely.
The law prohibits online money games, advertising for them, and facilitating related payments — regardless of skill or chance.
With real-money gaming effectively removed from the legal market, CCI concluded that continuing the Google case no longer served a purpose.
For payment players, the key point is clear: India’s gaming restrictions now directly extend to the payment layer, adding further pressure on PSPs, aggregators and banks handling these flows.
The CCI noted that the case could return if the law is overturned, repealed or stayed.
